Few places match Zermatt it for its combination of excellent advanced and intermediate skiing, reliable snow, magnificent scenery, Alpine-village charm and (not least) mountain restaurants with an unbeatable combination of superb food and stunning views. Some people complain that the car-free village is spoiled by the intrusive electric carts and taxis, and that the atmosphere is one of Swiss efficiency and international (or intercontinental) tourism rather than mountain-village friendliness. But the place still has a magical feel to it, particularly when you get away from the busy, modern-seeming main street into the winding snowy paths, with their old wooden buildings. Most of Zermatt's flaws are minor when put alongside its attractions, which come close to matching perfectly our notion of the ideal ski resort. It is certainly one of our favourite resorts, and we are not alone.

Zermatt started life as a traditional mountain village, then developed as a mountaineering centre in the 19th century before becoming a winter ski resort too. Summer is still as important to the resort as winter. The village is a mixture of chocolate-box chalets and more modern buildings - most of them are built in traditional style. The main street runs past the station and is lined with large luxurious hotels and smart shops.
