Zell am Ziller may be slightly overshadowed Mayrhofen, Zell has skiing of comparable scale and character, with similarly inconvenient lift arrangements. Skiing seems rather incidental to Zell -partly because it is one of the main communities of the Zillertal and partly because the ski lifts are some distance away, and the pistes even further. With an ornately decorated church and a brewery, Zell sits in the flat bottom of the Ziller valley, a few miles from Mayrhofen. Zell's skiing is almost entirely for intermediates.

It takes place on two mountains: Kreuzjoch and Gerlosstein. The main Kreuzjoch ski area is approached by gondola from Rohr, a short bus-ride across the valley to the east. It goes up to Wiesenalm (1310m); there is no piste back to the valley.

The heart of the skiing, with runs above and below in every direction, is the sunny shelf of Rosenalm (1745m). One of the chairs from here goes to 2410m, the high-point of the skiing. The Gerlosstein cable-car starts a longer bus-ride away at Hainzenberg and gives access to a much smaller area - consisting mainly of two chair-lifts meeting at the peak of Arbiskogel. You have a choice of the local ski pass or the wide-ranging Zillertal pass, also covering valley trains and buses. The bus service to the local slopes is good, but geared towards skiing one area or the other all day. The service in the middle of the day is poor. By Tyrolean standards the skiing is quite high, but the Kreuzjoch slopes get the afternoon sun, so snow reliability is better early in the season than late. Most of the Gerlosstein slopes are roughly north-facing, so snow is usually better. Neither area has much to offer advanced skiers. The only black, from Arbiskogel at the top of the Gerlosstein area, is short and barely deserves its grading. There is off-piste skiing between the runs at Kreuzjoch. Whether intermediate skiers will like Zell depends on how concerned they are about the inconvenient access to the skiing and the limited extent of it. There are essentially only half a dozen runs, and although the terrain.
