Park started life around the turn of the century as a railway town, when Rio Grande railway workers started climbing up the slopes and skiing down. One of the resort's mountains, Mary Jane, is named after a legendary 'lady of pleasure' who is said to have received the land as payment for her favours. The railway still plays an important part in Winter Park's existence, with a station right at the foot of the ski area and regular ski trains bringing day trippers from Denver every Saturday and Sunday. The area around there is now known as Old Town Winter Park. Most accommodation, however, is a shuttle bus ride away in downtown Winter Park which straddles the main highway. Here condos are dotted around by the roadside and in the trees either side. There are also motels and restaurants lining the road, which continues northwards to the neighbouring town of Fraser. A car would be handy but is by no means essential.
