Westendorf is a small but lively resort that is part of the Ski-Welt pass-sharing arrangement (along with Soil, Ellmau, Brixen and others) but not part of the main skiing circuit. Its own slopes are not without interest (except for experts), and the friendliness of the village wins many repeat visitors. The village is a compact Tyrolean charmer, complete with attractive onion-domed church and sleighs.

The local ski area is a small section of leisurely skiing. A two-stage gondola takes you to Talkaser (1760m), from where you can ski various north-west-facing runs back to the resort.

There are short west-facing and east-facing runs below the two low peaks of Choralpe (1820m) and Fleiding (1890m), either side of Talkaser. A couple of red runs from Fleiding go down beyond the lifts to hamlets served by buses. The main Ski-Welt area is nearby at Brixen; there's a good bus service. The snow reliability of Westendorf's slopes is slightly better than that of some other Ski-Welt resorts, but there are limits to what shade and good maintenance (with some snowmaking on the lower runs) can achieve at this altitude. Most pistes are of blue difficulty, whatever their official grading. Second-year skiers and confident beginners have nice runs both between the mid-station and village, and alongside the Choralpe chair. The extensive nursery slopes are Westendorf's pride and joy. There are 30 km of local cross­country trails, less than in many neighbouring resorts. One trail links up with the Brixen route to Kirchberg. Snow-cover is a big problem.  Alpenrosenhiitte is small and friendly; Brechhornhaus is quiet; Gassnerhof is good if you don't mind catching a bus back to town; and Talkaiser and Choralpe are both busy. The ski schools have quite good reputations, though classes can be over-large and may cram English and Dutch together. Westendorf sells itself as a family resort and amenities are good.
