Wengen, like Murren across the valley offers some great skiing. Combine that with the charm of the village, the friendliness of the locals and the beauty of the scenery and you can see why the place entrances many people so completely that they never go anywhere else, whatever their skiing standard.  The skiing is not high - there's little above 2000m. But the old-world charm of the place is difficult to beat. You have to be willing to accept an old-world pace too. Taking the train up the mountain in the morning may be quaint but not speedy. Wengen is a place for relaxing and enjoying winter among Europe's most glorious scenery. It's not a place for skiers who want to maximise mileage, catch the most efficient lifts or find the most challenging skiing. Relax and you'll love it. Stay tense - in working mode - and you'll find it very frustrating.  Wengen was a farming community long before skiing became a sport or the first train chugged its way up the mountain. Today it's a charming 'traffic-free' village, much smaller and more unspoilt than you'd expect, given its fame as host to one of the most famous downhill races on the World Cup circuit. There's really only one main street, which is lined with chalet-style shops and hotels. The focal point of the village is at the southern end where the station and ski school meeting-area are located.

The only traffic you'll see in Wengen are the little electric hotel trucks, which gather at the station to pick up guests, and a couple of Range Rover taxis. But these can be very annoying as they tear past you while you're strolling through the streets. The views across the Lauterbrunnen valley from the shelf upon which Wengen sits are stunning.

They get even better as you travel up the mountain and the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch come into view. The Monch (Monk) is set between the other two and, mythology says, is there to protect the Jungfrau (Maiden) from the Eiger (Ogre). Wengen is home to the Downhill Only Club - so named when the first Brits persuaded the locals to keep the summer railway running up the mountain in winter so they would no longer have to climb up in order to ski down again. The main street is the hub of the village. Lined with hotels and shops, it also has the ice rink, curling club and village nursery slopes giving it a pleasant open aspect. The nursery slopes double as the venue for floodlit ski-jumping and parallel slalom races on several nights a season. The main form of transport up the mountain is the regular, incredibly punctual train to Kleine Scheidegg. There's also a cable-car from above the nursery slopes up to the Mannlichen ski area
