Vinuela is situated 14 kilometres to the north of Velez-Malaga and 45 kilometres from Malaga. The village lies at a height above sea level of 131 metres. Through the municipal area of Vinuela run the Guaro and Seco rivers, tributaries of the Velez. On the first of these, a dam has been built which has led to incalculable improvements in the agricultural production of La Axarqufa. Besides the olive, the most important crops here are the vine and cereals. The Vinuela Dam can be seen from various points of the Comarca. The village is built around a main street leading to different small residential areas, and was founded in recent times. At this point of the Royal Road from Malaga to Granada stood La Venta La Vina, which can still be seen, and it was around this building that dwellings began to spring up until Vinuela was formed, and it was from this place of sales of the vine that the village took its name.

The main building of interest in Vihuela is the Parish Church of San Jose, a 1 6th-century construction containing a late-19th-century Pieta of great artistic worth.Around this area, important archaeological sites dating back to prehistoric, Roman and medieval times have been discovered. The fiestas of Vinuela are held from 26 to 28 July, in honour of the Virgin of Las Angustias.
