Despite being incredibly popular with tourists, the Var is the second "greenest" region in France and has not been developed to anything like the extent of the neighbouring Alpes-Maritimes.

The capital is the large city of Toulon the town was once a popular destination for Europe's rich and famous before they moved east to Cannes and Nice. There are towns with very popular antiques fairs through out the summer.
Here you will find excellent markets some of the best markets in the south of France, villages with extremely pretty old shop-fronts. The village of Fayence is the hang gliding capital of Europe and competitions take place year round.
