Valloire is an unspoilt, old, working village, tucked away above the Maurienne valley. Despite having developed into a significant-sized ski resort, it has retained a feeling of 'real' France, complete with impressive old church, creperies, fromageries, village atmosphere and friendly locals. The 150km of piste are spread over three similar sized, lightly wooded ski areas Setaz, Valmeinier and Crey du Quart. The skiing is almost entirely intermediate, Les Karellis (a 45-minute drive) being better for more taxing runs (and for superior snow and scenery). A gondola leads up towards Setaz and a chair towards Crey du Quart and the link with the skiing of next-door Valmeinier. Reliable snow-cover is not a strong point, though Valloire does have a better recent snow record than similar but lower 'real' French ski villages such as La Clusaz, Morzine, Chatel and Megeve. Important links are too low, sunny and lacking artificial snow to ensure the whole area is usually skiable. The main piste to the village is fully served by snow cannon, whilst the Valmeinier area holds snow well. There is not much to challenge advanced skiers, though the Cascade and Olympiques pistes are fun. The mogul field down to Valmeinier 1500 represents the greatest challenge. Valloire is very much an intermediate area. Several of the pistes towards Valmeinier, and the JBM run to Valloire, are suitable for good intermediates, but average skiers have the widest choice of runs, with plenty of options in all three sections. A variety of pistes head to and from Valmeinier, making mixed-ability excursions a straightforward affair. The Crey du Quart section is particularly good for easy skiing. The limited village nursery areas are adequate in low season when snow cover is good.
