Velez-Malaga is the largest and most important in La Axar-quia. The city of Velez-Malaga is con?sidered as the capital of the comarca. But before we get to the city, there are 14 kilometres of coast to travel through, containing the tourist resort of Torre del Mar as well as a number of smaller villages (Chilches, Benajarafe, Valle-Niza and Almayate) residential areas, leisure facilities and hotel com?plexes. This short journey takes us through one of the most peaceful areas of the Costa del Sol. Four towers or beacons keep watch over the beaches of this coast: Torre de Chilches, Torre Moya in Banajarafe, Torre Jaral in Valle-Niza and Torre Manganeta, in the delta of the River Velez.Valle-Niza also contains the Castle of the Marques, an 1 8th-century building used for various purposes throughout its history.
Close to the mouth of the River Velez, three important archaeological sites containing remains left by the Phoeni?cians have been discovered. These are Toscanos, Alarcon and the necropolis at Jardfn, and all date back to the period from the 8th to the 6th century BC. Crossing the River Velez, we come to Torre del Mar, originally founded to de?fend Velez-Malaga and as the departure point for goods produced in La Axar-quia. Since the 1 9th century, Torre del Mar has been the centre of sugar produc?tion for the area, with a factory built by the Larios family. This old fishing quarter has grown enormously in recent times, to become one of the leading tourist resorts on the Costa del Sol.The town offers the visitor its many hotels, apartments, restaurants, discotheques and beach stalls, as well as innumerable leisure facilities, in?cluding a water theme park. Just out?side Torre del Mar, on the Nerja road, there is Calera de Velez, with the most important fishing and pleasure harbour to be found between Malaga and Motril. The sea front at Torre del Mar is considered to be the longest in the Mediterranean. The city of Velez-Malaga is four kilometres inland. With more than25,000 inhabitants (and over 50,000 in the whole municipality) this is one of the most important cities in the Pro?vince of Malaga and is, as we have mentioned, considered the capital of La Axarqufa. It is situated in the great valley of the River Velez, formerly known as Menoba.
Besides the tourist trade, its main resources are agricultural products, the vine, olives, sugar cane, and the city is renowned for its oils and wines. The historic origins of the city go back to the Phoenicians and the Carthagi?nians, of which civilisations a great many important remains have been discovered here. There is some evidence that the Greek city of Mainake once stood here, but as yet definitive proof has not been found.
