Standing in the centre of traffic-free Vail, surrounded by chalet-style wooden buildings and bierkellers, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in a top Austrian resort. And that's just how founder Pete Seibert intended it to be when he envisaged it in the 1950s. Vail is now enormous, stretching for seven miles at the foot of the biggest ski mountain in the US. There are hotels, condos, bars, restaurants and night-spots to suit every taste and pocket. Beaver Creek, a resort developed by the owners of Vail in the 1980s, is ten miles to the west of Vail itself. It is unashamedly upmarket and luxurious, with a choice of top-quality hotels and condominiums right by the slopes. It is pedestrian-only and built around a huge square featuring exquisite bronze statues and even an open-air fire to warm you up on evening promenades. Arrowhead is the newest addition to Vail's portfolio. A collection of luxury, secluded chalets, it was a tiny exclusive resort until bought by Vail. Arrowhead will be linked to Beaver Creek's skiing for the 1996/7 season. Between them, Vail and Beaver Creek already have so many 'firsts' it's unbelievable: biggest ski area in the US; most high-speed quad chair-lifts in the world, most snow-grooming machines, and most ski instructors.
