Gabes situated at the centre of what is described as the African sands, near Sirte and Leptis Magna, the traveller finds the city of Tacapa.

Tacapa is the ancient name of Gabes which was cited in Medieval times and into the XVI century. It was an important strategic point for which the city was considered one of the best closing points of the Tripolitan area. With the wealth of the oasis described by Pliny in his Natural History, the beauty of its beaches and the in­creasing activity of its modern port, Gabes is proud to have welcomed one of the Prophet Sidi Boulbaba's companions whose grave is much revered and visited even today.
