Bulla Regia, This ancient city was the capital of a small Numidian reign at the beginning of the second century and during the 2nd and 3rd centuries was very prosperous.
Bulla Regia owes its fame to the celebrated subterranean villas with their magnificent mosaic floors; one of which called the Hunting Mosaic gave its name to the house called the House of the Hunt, and today exhibited in the Bardo Museum. From this point of view, one recognizes the outstanding nature of this place. Often, the ground floor has completely disappeared and only the basement level of the house, subterranean with courtyard and perystile surrounded by rooms, has remained.
In the House of the Hunt called oecus, one should note the dining room and the numerous designs of the mosaic floors (the House of the New Hunt, the House of Fishing etc): hunting scenes, birds, seas full of fish with fishermen putti, ducks; in the House of Amphitrite, Am-phitrite mounts a sea-centaur flanked by Neptune and two genii. The monument "in opus reticulatum" (one of the oldest here dating from the 1st century A.D.) the Baths of Julia Memmia, the two twin Christian basilicas, the remains of the forum, of the Capitol, of the market and the theater (with a well-preserved stage), notwithstanding their undeniable importance do not allow us to forget these underground houses that, if visited during the hot summer months, offer unforgettable underground cool. Our thoughts turn to the inhabitants of Bulla Regia and we understand the entire foundation of such an architectural curiosity.
