Totalan is 22 kilometres from Malaga and 55 kilometres from Velez-Malaga. Situated at 290 metres above sea level, it has a population of 800. The vegetation of the area, which forms part of the most easterly region of La Hoya de Malaga, consists predominantly of the bushes and shrubs characteristic of the foothills. The main crops are olives, almonds and grapes, exquisite whether eaten fresh or as raisins. Most of the village is of modern construction, its outstanding historic monument being its 17th-century parish church, its tower crowned by a pyramidal roof. The history of the area records an outstanding event in 1483, when a Christian army descended the Totalan River. The were spotted in time for the local inhabitants to take refuge in the fortresses of the comarca, and the invaders were defeated by the soldiers of El Zagal, chief of the Moslim occupants of Granada, delaying for some time the imminent conquest of this territory.
The festivities in honour of the patron saint of Totalan, Our Lady of the Rosary, take place from 24-26 May, and include a Flamenco festival and a cattle show.
