Ski holiday in St Martin de Belleville Book Direct With Owner.
St-Martin is a traditional Savoyard village, with old church, small square and old wooden and stone buildings. It is the administrative centre for the whole Belleville valley (which includes Les Menuires and Val-Thorens). In 1950 it didn't even have running water or electricity. In the 1960s and 1970s the nearby purpose-built ski resorts were developed. St-Martin became a bit of a backwater. But in the late 1980s a couple of slow chair-lifts were built, linking it to the Trois Vallees skiing. It is now well worth considering as a quiet alternative to the mega-resorts. The main disadvantages are the slow, cold 30-minute ride up into the skiing each day and the run back which doesn't survive if it's too warm for snowmaking. At least the bottom chair-lift was slightly upgraded last season. A rolling carpet was installed so the lift can now be run faster, cutting the ride by five minutes. A new Grangeraies district has been built to extend the accommodation at the foot of the slopes. It blends in well, in contrast to its neighbours up the valley.
