In some ways St Johann in Tirol falls between two styles. Its ski area is small and predominantly easy. But with no fewer than 18 mountain restaurants, fairly convenient ski lifts and plenty of off-slope facilities, St Johann is a fine choice for leisurely, part-time skiers who like to spend as much time pottering about having coffee and lunch as they do actually skiing. St Johann also suits the most energetic of skiers who want to tour around visiting surrounding ski resorts and have plenty of evening entertainment awaiting their return. St Johann is a sizeable town with a life outside skiing. The compact centre is wedged between a railway track, main roads and converging rivers. It is fairly attractive, certainly atmospheric, and has retained some traditional character. The main street is full of old wooden chalet buildings housing hotels, restaurants, cafes and homely bars.
