Spanish Skiing in the Pyrenees & Sierra Nevada

There well equipped Pyrenean resorts with fine snow sure skiing that compare very favourably with the best mid-size places in the Alps. And down in the south, near Granada, lies a resort which is has hosted the World Alpine Ski Championships. The resorts are frequented by the King of Spain yet they are relatively inexpensive. Skiing is also becoming more popular with the increasingly prosperous Spanish themselves, and as a result many of the smaller resorts are now improving their facilities.

Furthermore, the general ambience of Spanish skiing is attractive not unlike that of Italy. There's plenty of animation, with eating, posing and partying taken seriously. Large families often lunch together, creating much merriment while huge amounts of food are
consumed. Dinner starts late after such a blow out, so in turn nightlife doesn't get going before many a British punter has retired. Ski Spain you will not be disappointed.

Baqueira-Beret (1500m) is atypical of the Pyrenees - a user- friendly resort with high standard accommodation, modern lifts and a sizeable, fairly snow sure ski area. Spanish prices make it a real bargain. The mountain seems bigger than its claim of 90km of piste would suggest, thanks to its variety. The skiing is mostly above 1800m, much of it northish-facing, backed up by snowmakers. Queues are rare because most of the lifts are high-capacity chairs.
There's skiing for all grades including some steep challenges.

The smaller Pyrenean resorts are best toured by car: spend a day in each and drive to more sheltered places if the wind blows. The best- known, Formigal, and has a good ski school but is windswept. Panticosa, a charming old village with sheltered, if limited skiing. La Molina has a sizeable ski area. It's an old place, preferable to its dreary purpose-built satellite, Supermolina.
