Slovakia's capital city Bratislava is a growing hub of culture, as well as the national seat of politics and business. Its thousand year history offers a great deal to visitors. The second-largest city of Slovakia has a multitude of hiking trails, some of which lead to the very peaks of the Tatra Mountains or through river gorges in deep primeval forests. Skiing is available at many levels, and Slovakia’s hilly terrain means in winter it is always reachable within an hour or two (although artificial snow-making is still limited to a small number of ski areas). Cross-country skiing is best supported in Strbske Pleso in the High Tatras, but many other regions also have some trails, rentals and other facilities. In some areas, canoeing is gentle enough to be a family activity. Bicycles can be rented in the main vacation areas, such as the High Tatras. Aquaparks are springing up, with the first large facility near Liptovsky Mikulas (an hour west of the High Tatras). Here the crafts include ceramics and various textile forms from weaving to embroidery. Wiresmithing, creating decorative objects by shaping wire, is a little-known local specialty well worth a look. Slovakia is also home to more than 50 museums. The Slovak National Museum (founded in 1893), located in Bratislava, contains exhibits on Slovak history, archaeology, and musicology, and is probably the country’s best-known museum. Other museums include the Slovak National Gallery (1948), also in Bratislava; the Slovak National Uprising Museum (1955), located in Banská Bystrica; and the Museum of Eastern Slovakia (1872), in Košice.
