Just a mile from the end of Main Street, this is the 'dude' skiing capital of Utah - famed for the care and attention lavished on both slopes and guests. Valets unload your equipment in the car park, the chair-lifts are padded and it looks as if stones are hand-picked off the slopes - it's very obviously aimed at people who are used to being pampered and can pay for it. The eating places are particularly upmarket: the Huggery's seafood buffet is spectacular. Some of the lodgings are similarly top-dollar, including the Stein Eriksen Lodge and Goldener Hirsch at Silver Lake Village at mid-mountain (but reachable by road). The terrace of Stein Eriksen and the Stag, lower down, offer excellent lunchtime cuisine unheard of in most US resorts. The slopes are immaculate, though not all are easy - there are mogul runs and 'double black diamond' skiing in the top bowls. And some runs are left un-groomed after a snowfall, creating the conditions that incompetent but ambitious intermediates dream about: a foot of powder on a completely smooth base.
