Andermatt is an attractive village, with wooden houses lining the dog-leg main street, which runs from railway to cable-car stations via a hump­backed bridge that many an unchained car fails to conquer.For off-piste skiers Andermatt is one of the most inviting resorts in the world, thanks to a combination of suitable terrain, abundant snowfalls and, lift and piste development. The main cable-car serves magnificent, varied skiing on the open, usually empty, slopes of the Gemsstock, and there are three more ski areas along the valley: Natschen, Winterhorn (above Hospental) and Realp. The valley railway provides the only link between Andermatt and the latter two sectors, and offers tempting connections with resorts to the east (Davos, St Moritz) and west (Zermatt and other Valais resorts). You can put your car on some trains. Andermatt is most definitely a resort for advanced skiers, with the Gemsstock boasting two superb long blacks in the north-facing bowl beneath the top cable-car, and another from mid-mountain back to the village. Much of the rest is 1500m vertical of challenging off-piste. Andermatt has plenty of guides for off-piste adventure and safaris, and heli-skiing. Unfortunately the Gemsstock cable-car can take a while to get going after a heavy snowfall, but Winterhorn and Natschen both provide black runs and off-piste opportunities while you wait.
