France has now overtaken Austria as the most popular destination for British skiers. It's not difficult to see why. France has the biggest linked ski areas in the world; for keen piste bashers who like to ski as many miles of piste in a day as possible, these are unrivalled. It also has some of the toughest, highest, wildest skiing in the Alps, and some of the longest, gentlest and most convenient beginner runs.
If you prefer, there are genuinely old mountain villages to stay in, linked directly to the big ski areas. These are not usually as convenient for the skiing, but they give you a feel of being in France, examples include Montchavin or Champagny for La Plagne, Vaujany for Alpe-d'Huez, St-Martin-de-Belleville for the Trois Vallees and Les Carroz or Samoens (a short drive from the slopes) for Flaine.
