Serre-Chevalier is one of the less well known of the major French resorts to British skiers. It deserves better. If you love old French villages with a genuinely French atmosphere and traditional restaurants, hotels and creperies. The skiing is equally likable. Although there is skiing on only one side of the long valley, it is split into different segments, so you really feel you are travelling around as you tour them on pistes and lifts.

Intermediates will appreciate the skiing most, but in good snow conditions there are excellent off-piste opportunities to keep good skiers happy too. What really sets it apart from the French norm is the amount of woodland skiing, making Serre-Chevalier one of the best places to be when snow is falling (though there's plenty of open skiing too).

  • Fairly big ski area, ideally suited to intermediates, with lots of blue and red cruising runs.

  • Interesting mixture of wooded skiing (ideal for poor visibility, white-out conditions) and open bowl skiing above the tree-line.

  • One of the few big French ski areas based on old, picturesque villages.

  • Good-value and atmospheric old hotels, restaurants and chalets.

  • Buses link all the villages, so you can end the day wherever you like.

  • Lift pass covers several other major resorts easily reached by car.

  • Some good off-piste opportunities

The resort Monetier is the smallest, quietest and most unspoilt of the main villages, with a distinctly Provencal feel to its narrow streets, stone buildings with shutters and small square with a fountain. New building, in sympathetic style, has taken place on the other side of the main road, near the lifts into the skiing. Villeneuve has three major gondolas out of the village. The hamlet of Le Bez is peaceful and traditional, with old small stone chalets and barns. Across the main road and river the old village of La Salle is an enticing traditional village of stone houses, hotels, bars, restaurants and creperies. Chantemerle has more modern buildings in the centre and along the main road. Piste skiing can be limited for advanced and expert skiers.
