In this gently rolling countryside the countryside contains the northern part of the Beaujolais area. The Charolais area you will find provides the best beef in France every Wednesday, two important cattle markets are held - one at Charolles and at St Christophe-en-Brionnaiswith the Chalonaise and Maçonais wines being fruity in there taste. Marcigny wine tasting in the Beaujolais vineyards and Semur-en-Brionnaisare is a must. The city of Macon it dates back to the 2nd century B.C. The city very soon became a busy crossroad. Border between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Empire from 843. Today this region provides the tourist with a wealth of history and culture not to be missed. Tourist come here for the day cruises on the river Saone, with the possibility of cruising down to Lyon, or up to Gray. Le Bourg is an excellent stepping off point from which to explore this totally unspoilt region. There are little Romanesque churches to explore, at La Clayette, you will find a magnificent château in the middle of a lake forming the centrepiece of the town and remember to visit Bernard Dufoux in La Clayette the smell on entering the shop of this master chocolate maker is intoxicating, and the taste, irresistible. The car museum in the château is open to visitors. If you enjoy walking or cycling, there are routes on the doorstep. The Tour de France frequently passes through Mâcon on its way down from the Alps around the month of July
