Salares lies in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara at a height of 579 metres, a green, mountainous region whose vines produce a rich wine and fine olives. The village contains a small olive oil factory. Salares is 58 kilometres from Malaga and 28 from Velez-Malaga, and has a population of some 400 inhabitants. Its steep, winding streets are closed to traffic, combining peace and silence with the beauty of the village. The origins of Salares go back to Roman times, when it was known as Salaria Bastitanorum. Its later history echoes that of the other villages of the area, with Moorish occupation, Christian Reconquest and Moorish uprisings. The Parish Church of Santa Ana is built in Mudejar style over the site of a mosque, of which the minaret, similar to that of Salares, has been conserved. It was constructed at a slightly later date, perhaps in imitation of the latter. It was formerly whitewashed, but the passing of time has revealed the original Almohad decoration of its walls: varied rhomboid shapes in brick and blue and white tiles.
At the top of the tower there is now a belfry with a pyramid-shaped roof. The fiestas of Salares are held on 1 7 January and 26 July, for Saint Anton and Saint Anna respectively.
