Sedella you will find the municipal area is bounded by the River Rubite, a tributary of the Velez, and the border with the Province of Granada. Streams from numerous springs in the nearby Tejeda and Almijara sierras irrigate this area, a hilly zone where olives, almonds and grapes are grown. Salares is 62 kilometres from Malaga and 32 from Velez-Malaga. Standing at a height of 689 metres, it has a population of around 1,000. The winding, narrow streets of the village are flanked by whitewashed houses, most of which have a courtyard or back garden. The origins of Salares are believed to go back to Moorish times. Near to the village are the ruins of an old military fortress. After the Re-conquest, the Catholic Monarchs granted these lands to Fernandez of Cordova. A legend tells of the origin of the name of the village. Apparently, Isabel the Catholic in answer to a question about a battle which had been fought nearby, replied "Se de ella" ("I know of it"). The most important monument in the village is the Casa Torreon, formerly the mayor's residence.
This tower, with paired arches, is built in the Renaissance-Mudejar style. The Parish Church of San Andres is of recent construction, but conserves a 1 6th-century tower crowned by an octagonal body and stained glass tiles at the top. At the opposite end of Sedella is the Shrine of the Virgen de la Espe-ranza.Sedella holds festivities in honour of Saint Anthony from 16-18 January, whilst in summer the Virgin of Hope is honoured from 1 5-20 August.
