The Portes du Soleil vies with the Trois Vallees for the title of World's Largest Ski Area, but its skiing is very different from that of Meribel and neighbours. It is spread out over a much larger area, most of which forms part of a central circuit straddling the French-Swiss border; smaller areas branch off from that circuit. The skiing is great for keen intermediate skiers who like to travel long distances in a leisurely fashion. There are few of the tightly packed networks of runs that encourage you to stay put in one area.

It also has the most densely packed section of runs, ski-in ski-out convenience and good lift links to Champery, Chatel and Morzine. The other villages are generally attractive but less snowsure. Morzine is the closest and best-linked alternative. It's a summer as well as a winter resort - a pleasant, bustling little town with a sizeable, pretty ski area of its own.

Being a town it has good shops and restaurants, traffic, lots of walking to the lifts, plenty to do. The local skiing is shared with unspoilt user-friendly Les Gets. The other main French resort is Chatel. It's on the main circuit, and given good snow has some of the best skiing in the area. Champery is the obvious choice for those looking for something more peaceful, linked by cable-car to the main circuit.

Morgins, in contrast, has excellent village slopes - but its local skiing is otherwise very limited. Champoussin and Les Crosets are purpose-built mini-resorts between Champery and Morgins, with extensive slopes all around - and excellent links to Avoriaz.
