Cruising down the Festkogl on a sunny Sunday morning, with seemingly the whole piste to yourself, sending up plumes of powdery snow, Obergurgl can seem idyllic. Few places can rival it for trouble-free, snow sure skiing. When you add  atmosphere and very jolly tea-time apres-ski, Obergurgl becomes the perfect resort for a certain type of skier. This is borne out by the remarkably high proportion of Obergurgl regulars who have been going there annually for years. It's best to book early to avoid disappointment. But the Obergurgl-Hochgurgl ski area is not for everyone. Obergurgl is based on a traditional old village, set in a remote spot, the dead end of a long road up past Solden.

  • One of the most reliable resorts for snow in the Alps, especially good for a late-season holiday
  • Excellent ski area for beginners, unadventurous intermediates andfamilies
  • Normally queue- and crowd-free
  • Retains village charm despitemodern developmentJolly tea-time apres-ski

It is the highest parish in Austria and is usually under a blanket of snow from November until May. Once they have arrived, most people don't use their cars. Obergurgl has no through-traffic and few day visitors, so the village is usually traffic-free. Despite its fairly small size, Obergurgl is a village of parts. At the entrance to the resort is a cluster of hotels near the main gondola. The road then passes a second group of hotels around the ice rink, up the hillside to the left, before coming to the village proper. This starts with an attractive little square, with church, fountain, and the original village hotel (the Edelweiss und Gurgl). Village atmosphere is jolly during the day and immediately after skiing, but can be subdued at night when most people stay in their hotels. Hochgurgl, a bus-ride away. There are some good off-piste runs to explore with a guide.
