Neustift offers the quality of the glacier skiing zokm away at the top of the Stubai valley. It has its own little ski area where unadventurous intermediates can potter happily. However, the Stubaigletscher is one of the best skiing glaciers in Austria, and that means one of the best in the world. Neustift is a very attractive, traditional Tyrolean village about half-way along the Stubai valley, south-west of Innsbruck. It is the closest large community to the glacier, but not the only village in the valley with ski-resort status. Down the valley towards Innsbruck, Fulpmes has a more extensive local ski area, and plenty of accommodation both in Fulpmes itself and in the satellite village of Telfes. Mieders, still further down the valley, has some skiing too.

The Stubai valley lift pass covers all these resorts and the glacier lifts, as well as the ski-bus Neustift's local ski area is a narrow chain of slopes and lifts - mainly drags - from Elferhiitte at 2080m down to the village. With the exception of one short blue run at altitude, the skiing is all graded red.

This main area is on the south-east side of the valley; there is also a nursery area at village level, on the other side. The Stubai glacier is a much more extensive area of blue and red runs (and one short black) between 3200m and the first station of the main access lifts, at 2300m. The glacier is broken up by rocky peaks, giving more sense of variety in the skiing than is normal on a glacier. But the landscape is harsh and unattractive, with lots of moraine. On the glacier snow reliability is not a problem. The local slopes face roughly north, but are of typically modest Austrian altitude. The sunny village nursery slopes can be unreliable. The local skiing does not have much to offer advanced skiers, and the glacier is not in the same league as Hintertux for challenge, but there are long runs to be done, including a 4km ski route down the east side of the glacier, and a splendid 10km ski route down a deserted bowl back to Mutterberg in the valley at 1750m. For intermediate skiers, the local skiing rather falls between  not easy, but it is not extensive -so its main appeal is to the confident intermediate who wants to practise technique rather than get around. The glacier is splendid intermediate territory, whatever your standard. This is not a resort for beginners; the village nursery slopes are attractive, but too sunny - though they do have snowmakers. There are 100km of cross-country trails in the Stubaital, including some trails at altitude reached by the lifts serving the Fulpmes and Mieders Alpine skiing. Mieders is the best base. There are trails on the glacier.  There are great views to be had outside the tiny cabin at the top of the glacier, at Jochdohle. There are ski schools both in Neustift itself and at the glacier. Guided ski tours are available. Children can be looked after all day
