Morzine is a large, traditional, town mountain resort which sprawl on both sides of a river gorge and on several levels. Under a blanket of snow, its chalet-style buildings look charming, and in spring the village quickly takes on a spruce appearance. . At the foot of this road, next to the river, is the old centre of Morzine, but most resort amenities are clustered up the hill around the Le Pleney lifts. Accommodation is widely scattered, and a good bus service operates on six routes around the town, giving access to outlying lifts (though not linking them very cleverly). Morzine is essentially a family resort. Consequently village ambience tends to be fairly subdued. . For such skiers, the main drawback to staying in Morzine is the strong possibility of poor local snow conditions, and the frustration involved in getting to, and through, queue-prone Avoriaz.Such problems can, however, be avoided by taking a car.

A little-used gondola awaits at Ardent, a short drive from Moraine; from there you can ski the circuit clockwise via Chatel, missing out Avoriaz. If snow is poor, Avoriaz is normally the first thought - but it's everyone else's first thought too. If you have a car, you have the alternative of visiting nearby Flaine, a resort far better than Avoriaz at coping with crowds looking for snow. Moraine is one of the easiest ski resorts to drive to from the Channel - there is a motorway from Calais to nearby Cluses.

Montriond

  • The Ski Resort

Morzine is a large, traditional, towny mountain resort which sprawls amorphously on both sides of a river gorge and on several levels. Under a blanket of snow, its chalet-style buildings look charming, and in spring the village quickly takes on a spruce appearance. But at this altitude in France, the blanket of snow often gives way to slush and mud, which is less appealing. Perhaps because the French share our view that the resort suits car drivers, there are lots of them, and the resort suffers.
