Megeve offers gentle woodland skiing, rustic charm, pretty scenery, attractive mountain restaurants, lovely walks, sophisticated nightlife and friendly locals. It has certainly lost that title now to Courchevel: it no longer boasts a single restaurant with Michelin stars; Courchevel has two. Megeve's pretty tree-lined skiing is ideal for gentle intermediate cruising and gourmet lunching. But in poor years, Megeve's ski area can suffer because of its shortage of high altitude skiing and paucity of snowmaking facilities. And the town's rustic charm is now marred by severe traffic problems .The area lift pass covers the relatively snow sure skiing of several nearby resorts, including Chamonix, Les Contamines and Courmayeur in Italy. So if you are prepared to take a car and tour around, you are guaranteed good skiing. Alternatively book late when you know the snow is good, or find a tour operator who will transport you to neighbouring resorts in times of snow shortage.
