Periana a Villas & Apartments

Periana is just a short drive from Alcaucfn. Periana is 58 kilometres from Malaga and 23 from Velez-Malaga, lies at a height of 547 metres above sea level and has a population of 3,700. Periana is surrounded by moutains, the heighest points being Mount Umbn'a and the sierras of Carrion and Pinto. The climate here, and all along this Route, is less mild, with rainy periods, hot summers and winters colder than on the coast. For this reason, the agriculture of the region is based on dry farming, the principal products being the olive and fruit, particularly peaches, which play an important role in the local economy and in the festivities of the town.

The peaches of Periana are said to be the best in Spain. The streets of the town are steep, with steps in places. The main squares of Periana are the Plaza de la Fuente, in which the town hall stands, and the Plaza de la Lomilleja, which contains the parish church.

That this area was populated as far back as prehistoric times is proven by the numerous important sites and settlements discovered by archaeologists, including those at Cerro de Capellanfa, El Fuerte, Llano de la Matanza, Rio Seco and Cerro Alcolea.

Important Moorish remains are also to be found in Vilo, a few kilometres to the north of Periana.
