Frigiliana lies some eight kilometres from Frigiliana-Costa to the crossroads leading to Frigiliana reveal a coastline in which the wide beaches are replaced by tiny coves, bathed by crystal-clear waters. The stretch within the municipality of Nerja contains two Almenara towers: Torre Macaca and the Torrecilla, or Torre de Nerja.Around Frigiliana, irrigated by the River Higueron, sub-tropical fruits and vegetables are grown, whilst the dry areas produce olives and grapes for the excellent, sweet dry wines of the region. The town lies at a height of 435 metres in the foothills of the Sierra deEnmedio, a southern extension of the Sierra Almijara. The town has a popula­tion of 2,300 and is 56 kilometres from Malaga and 31 from Velez-Malaga. Frigiliana consists, in reality, of two ad­joining centres of population, one of Moorish origins and the other of recent construction, imitating the architectural style of the first.

Between the two districts are two interesting buildings: the former granary (1767) and a 1 6th-century noble palace, now converted into the molasses factory. The Moorish quarter conserves the full flavour of those by-gone times, its pav­ed streets winding and steep. It is perhaps the best-preserved Moorish settlement in the entire province, and has received several prizes for its beau­ty and conservation. Visiting the quarter, we find a series of ceramic panels relating the story of the Moorish uprisings which took place in Frigiliana.
