El Borge is Twenty-eight kilometres from Malaga and 24 from Velez-Malaga, the village is situated 237 metres above sea level, and has a population of 1,200. The site on which the village stands is rugged, its houses built on the sides of the valley of the River Borge, which runs through it. The streets rise up steeply, with steps in many places. The entire lay-out of the village has a profound air of Morisco town planning. The main agricultural product here is the vine, which gives grapes and raisins of unsurpassed quality. There are a large number of drying houses for raisins both in El Borges itself and in the hamlets of the surrounding countryside.

The Renaissance octagonal side chapels, whose exterior form is translated into two adjoining towers front, built of brick and adorned with tiles, is also remarkable.The cemetery is a curious example of popular architecture, containing a number of small pantheons crowned by pyramid-shaped spires of glazed tiles. The origins of El Borge are uncertain, though it is thought that it was first settled by shepherds who brought their flocks to pasture here. The name comes from the Arab word "Borch", a flat-roofed tower.
