Benamocarra a Villas & Apartments Book Direct With OwnersBenamocarra is a village standing 126 metres above sea level, 41 kilometres from Malaga and six kilometres from Velez-Malaga. Its agricultural produce already enjoyed great fame in the days of the Moorish occupation and, like Benamocarra, are citrus fruits, olives, the vine and subÂtropical fruits. The layout of the streets of Benamocarra, winding up the hillside, denotes the Moorish origins of the village, which is organised around two squares, Plaza del Calvario, at the top, and Plaza de la Constitucion, in which stands the Parish Church of Santa Ana. This is a 16th-century construction, in Gothic style, though greatly altered in 1949. Its tower is in the Mudejar style so dominant throughout this area. Close by the church is the house of the composer Eduardo Ocon, born in Benamocarra in 1833. The Moorish name of the village means "children of Mukarram", and remains of Moorish settlement here are to be seen near to the Well of Luchena, on the road to Velez-Malaga. After the Christian Re-conquest, the Moors were expelled and the village repopulated. Two romerias are held here every year: that of La Pava, on Resurrection SunÂday, and that of San Isidro, on 1 5 May. Advertise your Benamocarra accommodation free. |
