Alfarnatejo is just three kilometres from  Alfarnate  whilst it is 50 from Malaga and 37 from Velez-Malaga. Alfarnatejo -jo is also surrounded by mountains, the highest being Mount Chamizo to the west (1,637m) and El Gallo to the east (1,637m). The village itself lies at a height of 858 metres and has a population of some 500.

Neighbouring Alfarnate has played an important part in its recent history, Alfarnatejo jo becoming independent from it in the 1 8th century. In terms of economic activities and urban layout, the two are very similar. Nevertheless, the history of Alfarnatejo jo goes back much further, as is revealed by the neolithic remains discovered in the Pass of the River Sabar, and the site of an even older settlement in Ta-jo Gomez.Close to the village, there are also remains dating back to the period of Moorish occupation. These are the ruins of the castle of Sabar, situated at the top of Alto del Fraile.

The most important building in Alfarnatejo is its 18th-century Parish Church of Santo Cristo, with a brick-and-stone square tower of robust aspect. Local festivities include the Romeria de San Isidro (15 May) and those of the patron saint of Alfarnatejo jo, Santo Cristo de Cabrilla (29 September).
