At a height of 925 metres, surrounded by the mountains of the sierras of Alhama and El Jobo, Alfarnate has a population of some 1,600.The main economic activity of the village is based on its agriculture, the main products being olives, almonds and cereals, amongst which its famous chickpeas are worthy of mention. Of the buildings of Alfarnate, outstanding is the Church of Santa Ana, a 16th-century construction with a fine Mudejar minaret. Also interesting is the Shrine of the Virgen de Monsalud. Just outside the village is the Venta de Alfarnate, built in 1690, an inn where local bandits used to take refuge from their pursuers, now a restaurant of great prestige, serving the delicious typical dishes of the region. The origins of Alfarnate go back to the time of Moorish occupation, and Fernando the Catholic passed through the village with his troops, bent on the conquest of Velez-Malaga, in 1487. During the period of repopulation, it seems to have played an important role, denoted by the fact that it was known in those days as Puebla (Town) of Alfarnate. The Romerfa of Saint Mark takes place here on 25 April, whilst the festivities in honour of the patron saint of the village, Saint Anthony, are held on 1 3 June, an event in which fire plays a leading role. However, the most renowned festivities of Alfarnate take place on 12 September. These are the fiestas in honour of Our Lady of Monsalud, also known as those of "La Em-bajada" (The Embassy), and are based on the commemoration of the battles between Moors and Christians.
