Madonna is a largely modern, but pleasant, traditional-style village that has spread widely across its prettily wooded valley beneath the impressive Brenta Dolomites. Madonna resembles the resort of Cortina but offers greater value. Madonna is a pleasant village amid splendid Dolomite scenery, with an affluent and almost exclusively Italian clientele, despite qualities that should make it attractive to many intermediates. In contrast, Folgarida and Marilleva, with which Madonna shares quite an extensive ski area.

It is on a through-road, but most of the traffic is local and the road bypasses the focal piazza. There is another area of development about 1km to the south, and between the two is a frozen lake that is used for skating and other activities. Madonna has an abundance of quality shops to peruse whist not piste bashing. The terrain, as in other Dolomite areas, provides a lot of intermediate skiing, both above and below the tree-line.

There are three ski areas around Madonna itself, each with a handful of lifts and runs. Cable-cars from the edges of the village serve Cinque Laghi to the west and Pradalago to the north, and a rather less convenient gondola accesses Monte Spinale to the east. Just outside the village and 130m vertical above it, another gondola serves Passo Groste -the highest area, reaching 2505m, and also accessible via Spinale. Pradalago is linked by lift and piste to Monte Vigo (2180m), where the ski areas of Folgarida and Marilleva also meet. Although many of the slopes are sunny, they are at a fair altitude, and all three resorts have invested heavily in snowmakers. As a result, snow reliability is reasonable. Madonna's status as a World Cup racing resort should not lead advanced skiers to expect a lot. Even the 3-Tre race-course is no more than a steep red. Pista Nera is a good mogul field in the Folgarida section, and the Spinale and Groste sections can provide good off-piste skiing. Cinque Laghi, Madonna's racing mountain, is ideal for good intermediates.
