La Rosiere is not well known on the British market. For beginners and intermediates it deserves consideration. It's also a good choice for families and those wanting a quiet, relaxing week. Unlike many French purpose-built resorts, it has been built in traditional style, with chalets tucked away in the woods and no hideous high-rise buildings. And its prices are much lower than in the better-known (and nearby) Tarentaise resorts. The south-facing aspect of most of the slopes means it is very sunny - handy in early-season cold weather but a drawback in warm weather when the snow can deteriorate. However, if that is the case, you can always ski over to Italy where the north-facing slopes usually remain good. La Rosiere has been built in traditional chalet style beside the road which zigzags its way up to the Petit St Bernard pass to Italy from Bourg-St-Maurice and Seez in the valley. In winter the road ends in a snow bank at the top of the village, by the lifts. This is also home to some friendly St Bernard dogs, usually eager to pose for photos. The village makes a pleasant contrast with the stark architecture of resorts such as Les Arcs and La Plagne across the valley. All the buildings are attractive and many are dotted around discretely in the woods. But there really isn't that much there other than accommodation and a few shops. Expect peace, quiet and friendly locals but not a lively nightlife. Also expect few British, as La Rosiere hasn't been discovered by many tour operators yet. The first lift was built in 1962 and the resort has developed gradually since. The link with Italy means it has a big ski area for such a little-known resort. The skiing is on the largely south-facing flank of the mountain above the resort. Most runs, especially those the skiing is between 1850m and 2400m) and most of the area's artificial snow being on the Italian side, La Rosiere has a remarkably good snow record. But in warm weather expect the snow to be better on La Thuile's slopes.
