La Grave is the Alps' best-kept secret. Its skiing is almost exclusively tough, off-piste stuff in spectacular scenery, with a vertical drop of 2ioom. Good skiers who love off-piste, are willing to hire a guide and don't need 4-star comfort should give it serious consideration. It ranks with Val-d'lsere, St Anton and Chamonix for off-piste skiing, but comes at a fraction of the price, and includes the rustic charm of a village dating back to the i2th century.

La Grave is a remarkably unspoilt old mountaineering village set on a steep hillside against impressive glacial scenery that is dominated by the majestic 4000m Meije, the last major European peak to be conquered by mountaineers. The drab local stone and busy main road which separates the village from the ski area reduce the charm somewhat, but it still has a genuinely rustic feel. Prices are more in line with rural France than with the exorbitant levels normally charged in ski resorts, but there isn't much there - a handful of small hotels, sports shops, food shops and bars. The lift is conveniently close, but a car is useful in case poor weather closes the skiing. Les Deux-Alpes, Serre-Chevalier and Alpe-d'Huez are all around 30 minutes' drive away; Les Deux-Alpes can also be reached on skis over the top of the mountain.
