Kitzbuhel synonymous with Hahnenkamm downhill race is the most challenging on the World Cup circuit. And over the years the resort has successfully cultivated an international reputation as a rather special, even glamorous resort. But the Hahnenkamm race course is irrelevant to most skiers; it is specially prepared for the famous race, and is completely untypical of Kitzbiihel's skiing, which is mostly easy. It does of course get good snow, and the resort has recently made serious investments in snowmaking, but the spread-out nature and low altitude of the ski area mean that the problem is unlikely to go away. Set at a junction of pretty valleys, Kitzbuhel is a large, animated town, with a beautiful walled medieval centre - complete with quaint church, cobbled streets and attractively painted buildings - which is traffic-free during the day. But the much-publicised old town represents only a relatively small part of Kitzbuhel.
