Isola is one of the many small, high, purpose-built resorts in the French Alps, but differs from the rest in its extreme southern location, with access via Nice. 'Built by a British property company in the late 1960s, Isola aimed itself squarely at the family market. Front de Neige is a complex of apartments, shops, bars, restaurants and a couple of hotels that makes up the core of the resort, with nursery slopes and lifts on the door step. Owners have since worked hard to improve the image of the resort with new hamlets of more luxurious, wood-clad apartment blocks. But the main complex has become tatty at the same time, with shops closing down.

According to the piste map, there are three ski areas, St Sauveur, Pelevos and Levant. Really it is one linked area in a horseshoe shape around the resort. Due to the great base height of Isola - the lowest ski-able point is at 1840m - most of the skiing is above the tree-line. The main access point is the gondola from the centre of the complex to Pelevos at 2320m, and from there all three areas can be accessed more or less directly. Isola can get different weather from other major French resorts. Sometimes it has masses of snow when the rest of the French Alps have none; at other times it misses out. The north-facing slopes of St Sauveur and Pelevos tend to keep their snow well.
