Hungary, with an area of some 35,919 sq. miles is one of the smaller Central European countries, and shares borders with Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Romania.
There are two notable rivers: the Danube (Duna, 1,770 miles long), flowing through Hungary; and the Tisza (800miles long). To the east of the Tiaza is the Great Hungarian Plain.
To the east south and north are mountains. Lake Balaton (266 sq. miles) is the largest lake in Central Europe. To the north east is the much smaller Lake Velencei which is 10 sq miles.
Hungary has long, hot summers and cold winters, both tempered by relative nearness to the sea. Budapest the capital has July as its hottest month, at around 61° to 8a°F. (16° to a8°C.), and January as its coldest, at20° to 35°F. (-3° to +2°C.) rainfalls mostly in May and June.
The hill-forests are full of deer and boar, with wild geese arriving in great numbers, the typical plains bird is the bustard.
