Hintertux has one of the best glacier skiing areas in the world. It's popular with national ski teams for summer training. In winter, it provides guaranteed good snow even when the resorts of the nearby Zillertal are suffering badly. Hintertux is a tiny village surrounded by steep mountains on all sides except to the north, the village is in shade for much of the day in mid-winter. Its lifts lie a 15-minute walk away, across an enormous car park which gets filled with day-visitors' cars and coaches, especially when snow is poor in lower ski areas. Between the two villages are the hamlets of Madseit and Juns. Hintertux has a fair-sized ski area, with surprisingly challenging skiing for a glacier.

The main chain of lifts rises in four stages up the eastern side of the north-facing glacier. A choice of gondola and chair go up to Sommerbergalm (2100m), then to Tuxer-Ferner (2660m); then it's fiercely cold chairs only to 3050m and finally to Gefrorene Wand ('frozen wall') at 3250m. There are links across to another lOOOm-vertical chain of lifts below Grosser Kaserer on the west side of the glacier, and behind Gefrorene Wand is the area's one sunny piste, served by a chair. Back at Sommerbergalm is a small area of skiing below Tuxer Joch (2310m), start of an excellent off-piste run down a secluded valley to Hintertux. The glacier area is of course snow sure, and the remaining skiing is high and north-facing, making for reliable snow-cover. There is more to amuse advanced skiers here than on any other glacier, with runs of justifiably black grading on the west side, and skiing beneath glacier level that is consistently steep. The whole area is particularly suitable for good or aggressive intermediates. The long runs down from Gefrorene and Kaserer are tests, while the off-piste route from Tuxer Joch to the valley is not difficult apart from the unnerving initial traverse. Moderate skiers love the glacier, and there is a pleasant tree-lined run to the valley from Sommerbergalm. Novices have to take the bus to the nursery slopes at Madseit or Juns. There are a couple of fine near-beginner runs at the top of the glacier, but you need a full lift pass. There are cross-country trails between Madseit and Lanersbach.   The ski school has a good reputation and English is surprisingly widely spoken. There's a children's section and Lanersbach has a nursery.
