Heavenly top height of 3060m and vertical drop of 1065m, it's the highest and biggest of the dozen or more resorts clustered around scenic Lake Tahoe. The ski area has something for everyone (not least the expert), and having another dozen resorts within easy reach by car means that an interestingly varied holiday is assured. One of the key features of the skiing is the amazing views, particularly north across the lake; but those skiers who value that feature are likely to be dismayed by the appearance and atmosphere of the town of South Lake Tahoe, at the foot of the slopes. The Stateline area at its centre is dominated by four monstrous hotel-casinos (located just inches on the Nevada side of the line). These brash but comfortable hotels offer good-value accommodation and big-name entertainment as well as gambling. They are a conspicuous part of the amazing lake views from the ski area. More importantly, the area around the casinos is strangely devoid of 'downtown' atmosphere (never mind mountain resort atmosphere); there are few bars or shops, and the centre is bisected by US Highway 50. The casinos run free shuttle-buses to pull people in to the Stateline area at night, but many of the best bars and restaurants are tucked out of the way. The accommodation away from the centre includes chalet-style 'Alpine lodges', spacious condominium developments and run-of-the-mill motels. The base of Heavenly's skiing is California Lodge, beside a huge car park, a mile out of town, up a heavily wooded slope. There are medium-term plans to build a gondola into the skiing, starting close to the casinos.
