This fertile, distinctive island, known to the Greeks as Kerkira, is the chief of the Ionian Islands. For travellers by sea from the north or west it is the first outpost of Greece yet it is less Greek than any other part of the Country.

When the Byzantine Empire declined, the Ionian Islands were ruled first by the Venetians, then by the French, and finally (from 1815) by the British. They were ceded to Greece in 1864, but their varied past presents a flavour heavily seasoned by Western influences, especially the Venetian. Escaping the 400-year Turkish occupation of Greece the island group remained prosporous, cultured, and elegant.

Corfu is reached by air from Athens, London, and Brindisi; by boat and car-ferry from Piraeus, Patras, Igoumenitsa, and Italian ports. It is some 40 miles long, and in width varies from 20 miles to 5 miles.

The roads are narrow and winding; the island is small enough for the visitor to see it all in a very few days. The town of Corfu has many fine buildings, including the Georgian-style Palace and the Treasury of the Order of St Michael and St George.
