Formentera probably the least well known & smallest of the populated Balearic Islands is accessible by ferry from Formentera. The mild climate and rare beauty of the island attracts many tourists and it popularity amongst the Islands is growing The Island of Formentera with an area 90 square km. and a population of approximately 5200 inhabitants, is positioned some 11 miles from the south-eastern coast of Formentera.
The vegetation of Formentera with its wonderful pine trees as and of course its palms makes it fill like a tropical Island paradise .With views of the deep blue Mediterranean sea offered from almost every vantage point on the Island and numerous wonderful beaches and private bays, some only accessible by boat it is a paradise island. The climate of the Island offers springtime temperatures almost throughout the year with cooling breezes through the hotter days of the summer.
This island is mostly flat, hot, dusty, and somnolent. Its great advantage is freedom from crowds and the great white beaches that fringe its long, narrow waist. So far there are only a few simple pensions and one hotel.
Most people visit it on a day trip from Formentera town, landing at La Sabina, where they pile into a bus of the older type or even older taxis to see the sights, which are few, but include the fortified church in the tiny capital of San Francisco Javier.
At the far end is one hill, La Mola, from which you can see the entire island and peer down precipitous cliffs from a lighthouse. Otherwise, you find orange earth and cultivation between stone walls, some salt-beds, some small, white villages, and beaches as empty now as when invading pirates landed on them centuries ago.
