Caleta de Famara looks like it should be setting for a pirate film, the rugged scenery can only be described as breath taking, as you approach down the winding mountain road into the valley you will see the village of Famara nestled up close to the Atlantic Ocean, the village itself is small offering basic accommodation mainly for the surfers, Para gliders & hang gliders it attracts. There are no hotels in Famara only self catering accommodation such as Famara Bungalows which are semi circular in shape & of Norwegian design set out as a small village with a shop & restaurant and access directly onto the beach in fact the front line of bungalows are only 50 metres from the sea.
The beach of Caleta de Famara is the longest on Lanzarote backed by cliffs which are often used throughout October by Hang Gliders & Para Gliders. Surfing is the main sport in this area as the bay of Famara produces huge waves which are ideal for surfing & body boarding, consequently Famara has a surfing shop and surfing school where you can also hire all the equipment required, but unless you are a very experienced surfer you should book lessons with one of the certified surf schools on the Island as Famara has very strong currents. All though the beach is very inviting to families the sea is not suitable for children as there are strong under currents and the wind can suddenly gust in any direction.
The restaurants in the village offer fresh fish caught locally as well as the normal dishes such as Canarian potatoes cooked in sea salt. There is no late night entertainment other than the restaurants & bars but families eating alfresco on a late summers evening and discussing the techniques of surfing seem to make up for this.
Famara as with the other towns on Lanzarote has its Fiestas through out the year, one of which takes part in a flotilla of small boats which travel across the bay setting of fireworks.
