Courchevel is the favourite resort of the Paris jet set, who fly directly in to the mini airport at 1850. But it is not intimidatingly smart and, unlike many other fashionable places, it has skiing that is excellent in every respect. Its slopes are the most extensive, varied and immaculately groomed of the whole Trois Vallees. It has everything, from long gentle greens to steep, narrow couloirs, with plenty of blues, reds, black mogul fields - and tree-lined runs for bad weather. Many visitors are content to ski the Courchevel sector alone. But there is good access to the rest of the Trois Vallees for those who want it. Courchevel 1300 is a pleasant village, and the posh bits of 1850 are stylishly woody, but overall the resort is no beauty. Well, nothing's perfect Courchevel is much more French than Meribel, but getting more popular with the British. Courchevel is made up of four villages known by their altitudes (plus nearby La Tania).

  • Very extensive, varied skiing, part of the famous Trois Vallees area

  • Great easy runs for near-beginnerstSMuch of the accommodation is very convenient for skiing

  • Very impressive lift systemS Excellent piste maintenance, and widespread use ofsnowmakers

  • Wooded setting is pretty, and gives useful skiing in bad weather

  • Appealing old village at 1300

  • Some great restaurants

  • Surprisingly unpretentious for such an upmarket resort

They differ widely in skiing access, character and facilities. Bus services (covered by the lift pass) link the villages a frequent one between 1850 and 1650, hourly down to 1550 and 1300. 1850 is by far the largest village, and is very much the focal point of the area. It is certainly the place to stay if you're looking for nightlife or what few non-skiing facilities are available. 1850 is self-consciously upmarket, with some of the highest prices in the Alps.
