Few other major French ski resorts are based around what is still, essentially, a genuine mountain village rather than a purpose-built resort. It exudes Gallic charm and atmosphere, despite its expansion in recent years. Combine that with a fairly large, spread-out, mainly intermediate ski area with five separate interlinked sectors and you've got a good basis for an enjoyable, relaxed week, especially if you're a Francophile. La Clusaz has one big problem - its height, or rather the lack of it. Together with a lack of substantial snowmaking facilities, this means that its lower slopes are often bare or in poor condition. Snowmaking has been installed over the last couple of seasons.
