Like neighbouring Morzine, Chatel offers a blend of attractions that is uncommon in France - an old village with plenty of facilities, cheap accommodation by French standards, and a large ski area on the doorstep. Chatel's original rustic charm has been largely eroded in recent years, but some of it remains, and the resort has one obvious advantage over smoother Morzine: it is part of the main Portes du Soleil ski circuit. Skiers mainly interested in the local slopes should also consider Chatel. For confident intermediate skiers, Chatel's Linga has few equals in the Portes du Soleil, while the nearby Torgon section has arguably the best views. The Chapelle d'Abondance slopes are pleasantly un crowded at weekends, when many other sections are crowded. Chatel is not, however, ideal for beginners - the nursery slopes are up at Super-Chatel.
Very extensive, pretty, intermediate ski area - the Portes du Soleil
Wide range of cheap and cheerful, good-value accommodation
Easily reached - close to Geneva, and one of the shortest drives from the Channel
Pleasant, lively, French old village, still quite rustic in parts
Local skiing relatively queue-free
