Breckenridge was the first US resort to market itself aggressively. Breckenridge is probably the best base for exploration of the whole Ski the Summit area; it's certainly more lively and attractive than the other resorts in the conglomerate (Keystone and Copper Mountain). Between them the resorts offer an enormous amount of skiing - more than enough to keep even the keenest intermediate piste basher happy for a couple of weeks. Breckenridge was founded in 1859 and became a booming gold-mining town in the latter part of the century. The biggest ever gold nugget, weighing nearly 14 pounds and named Tom's Baby, was unearthed here. The old wooden and clapboard buildings have been well renovated and form the bottom part of Main Street. Over 250 restored Victorian buildings are included in what is Colorado's largest national historic district. New shopping malls and buildings have been added in similar style - though they are obvious modern additions. The town centre is attractively lively in the evening, with plenty of shops and over 100 restaurants and bars. Christmas lights and decorations remain on the lamp-posts throughout the season, giving the town an air of non-stop winter festivity. This is enhanced by a number of real winter festivals such as Ullr Fest.

  • Varied local ski area with some thing for all standards
  • Together with Keystone, Arapahoe Basin and Copper Mountain, forms the enormous Ski the Summit ski area, linked by free buses
  • Efficient lift system means few queues
  • Lively bars, restaurants and nightlife by US standards
  • Based on restored Victorian mining town, with many new buildings in attractive 19th-century style
